Mrs. Hazel Abel
July 24, 1917 - February 9, 2011
Mrs. Hazel Abel, 93, formerly of Bowling Green, KY passed away quietly on Wednesday February 9, 2011 in Roosevelt, NY with her family at her beside.Hazel was born in Bluefield, West Virginia. She was the daughter of the late William & Mozella Finney. Hazel was married to the late Francis Abel, Sr. Hazel was a faithful member of Taylor Chapel African Methodist Episocapl Church of Bowling Green; she served the Senior Choir, Steward, Willie Gossom Missionary Society, Rainbow Circle Club, Lay Organization. Hazel attended Young Street & Jones Street Elementary Schools. High School; Barbara Scotia in North Carolina , Tuskgee Institute of Tuskgee, Alabama,and was a High School graduate of R.R. Morton High School, in Farmville, Virginia. Hazel was a 1940 Virginia Union University Graduate. Hazel continued her education; Universal School of Handicrafts, Hunter College, New York University-Occupational Therapy Certification; in 1957 she recieved her MS Degree from New York University. Later she attended Hostra University in Uniondale, NY,. She was active with Community Action-Foster Grandparent Program. Hazel worked hard after graduating from college. Factory worker, United States Signal Corp in Fort Monmouth & Philadelphia. She was a homemaker for many years and started her own Child Care Program in her home. She also worked digiligently at Jabus Community Center teaching arts and crafts. Served as camp counselor in Salt Point New York for many summers. Worked as a dedicated Occupational Therapist at Jewish Chronic Disease Hospital & Menorah Hospital. Hazel worked as a Special Education Teacher for the New York City Board of Education.Hazel through out her life remained active and worked with much dedication to; Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation in New York,, Girl Scout Troop Leader 1951-1956 in Brooklyn, NY, NAACP Life time member, AARP of Bowling Green, KY, Girsl Club Board Member, George Washington Carver Club, Orgranizer of Friendship Homemaker Club, Newtown Homemaker Club, Friends of the Library, One of the organizers of the Ethnic Folk Festival. Ebon Social Club-Bowling Green, Human Rights & a member of Delta Sigma Theta. She is survived by her son: Mr. Francis S. (Marie) Abel, Jr of Roosevelt, New York. 2 Grandchildren, 6 Great Grandchildren. And a host of many friends
